SOCIAL MEDIA + YOU

One day Social Media sites took over the Internet. I'm just doing my best to make sense of it all.

As the new facebook rolls out, you will probably have a lot of questions.

Social media users who are already utilizing the new timeline and profile features are all asking one question: “Is our information still safe?”

For the longest time we’ve had to deal with the “like”, “comment” and “share” buttons.

Through research, facebook realized that the “extra” step was causing users not to share links and information. The Open Graph changes all of that, by eliminating the extra step, now facebook and everyone else can be fully integrated.

The new open graph technology eliminates the “share” step. By eliminating that crucial step, they’re hoping users will be more apt to share what they are watching, listening to, reading and even purchasing.

Spotify is the pioneer in this technology. Now you can “opt-in” to their share on timeline feature right from the beginning. By enabling this feature, Spotify will post what you are listening to on facebook’s Ticker in real time. Happen to be listening to a whole album? They’ll post that to your friend’s newsfeed.

What does this mean for you?

For the most part, websites should give you a chance to opt-in to this automatic posting feature.

It’ll be a one stop shop though, once you’ve added it to your timeline you’ve given the app full permission to post to your wall whenever you’re accessing their site.

  • Good news: It’s easy.
  • Bad news: If you forget you’ve enabled this feature, it can be embarrassing for you.

Furthermore, all of this constant activity may cause your friends to unsubscribe from you.

So is your account unsafe? No, you have to enable this feature before these apps can post on your wall. Is it annoying? Yep.

Are you going to enable apps to post automatically to your timeline?
