It wasn’t because of the media. East Coasters took Twitter and Facebook by storm DURING the earthquake. Who was the first person to say something?

It’s reported that the first tweets came through about 30 seconds before anyone felt tremors in New York City.

Over 18,000 people have checked into the Earthquakepocalypse 2011 on Foursquare.

Those who check social media sites like Twitter and Facebook were informed before the media about the events which truly shows the affect these sites have on the public. It probably won’t be long before we use Twitter and Facebook as our primary source of recent information (as oppose to checking news sites).
